Overview
Unis-Cité engages young people aged 18 to 25 in an innovative program of youth service in France – Unis Cité Corps.  Young men and women of all cultural and social backgrounds and education levels work in teams and dedicate themselves to a full-time commitment of six or nine months.
  • Mission – Engage and challenge youth for civic leadership while supporting community organizations and services.
  • Key Activities – A civic “rite of passage” with a double impact: 1/Community Development - Unis-Cité corps members help existing civic organizations meet their critical needs and 2/ Civic Training - Unis-Cité corps members receive support for developing their own future community projects. Corps members receive a monthly stipend of $ 730 to enable them to meet their personal needs during their year of service.
  • Impact - Since 1995, nearly 3,000 young people have risen to the challenge, completing more than 800 projects benefiting thousands of people in communities around France, in partnership with 400 local and national organizations.
Note: Unis-Cité is inspired from the US organization City Year, which was founded in Boston in the late eighties.

Overview
The association “Face au Monde”, located in the Trousseau Hospital in Paris, is a children’s charity created in 2003 by a group of French plastic surgeons.
  • Mission – give access to the very best surgery for children suffering facial malformations living in the world’s poorest countries.
  • Key Activities – When surgery to correct extreme facial malformations cannot be successfully done in a home country due to lack of technical skills or equipment, the association “Face au Monde” transports the children to France and pays for all the medical fees and surgery expenses conducted by top expert surgeons, working on a volunteer basis.
  • Impact – The association helps 7 children per year, coming from various countries, to get surgery in France.  The total costs of surgeries, transportation, visas, and other medical care, equals 15,000-20,000€.
Nathalie’s Personal Involvement
Most children spend their Sundays on a playground. My playground was the Necker Hospital in Paris. My playground friends were children with malformed faces. My father is a plastic surgeon and he used to take me along every Sunday for his visits at the hospital. I remember seeing my friend’s faces as if they were normal and fun kids. Unfortunately most people didn’t see them that way. I was fascinated to see my father giving those children a new face, a new smile, a new life. I didn’t become a surgeon (I’m a scriptwriter) but I’ve never stopped however to want to help those kids.

I then married the plastic surgeon who founded the association “Face au Monde”, Dr Gérald Franchi. It was natural for me to volunteer to help, especially in the context of an economic crisis in which it is harder to raise funds.  I recently organized an online lottery which helped raise approximately 30 000 euros, with great partners (like Open Skies which offered business class tickets to NY) and great media coverage : the French evening news, free ads in Le Nouvel Observateur, subway ads by the Fondation RATP, and participation from Google Grants program.

Call To Action
“Face au Monde” needs to raise 200,000€/year to reach its objectives of 10 children ‘surgeries per year.

HOW CAN ALUMNI HELP?
  • Personal donations & fundraising (personal or corporate)
  • Corporate partnerships (ie. prizes for next year’s lottery or long-term partnerships)
  • Volunteering for specific missions (legal advice, business advice, marketing advice, media advice, graphic advice etc).

Overview
For a Child’s Smile – was created in 1996 by a French retired couple, Christian and Marie-France des Pallières, to rescue the poorest of Cambodia’s children, those who are forced to scavenge through garbage dumps and bins to survive.
  • Key Activities - PSE assists children in many ways: meals, healthcare, protection, schooling, vocational training, lodging and support to families.
  • Impact - This year (2009-10), over 6500 children and young people are enrolled in our programs.  9000 meals are served every day.  Over 1500 families receive rice to make up for the loss of the children’s income.  70 families have received help to build a new home.  A number of women have received micro-loans start their small business.   PSE has a staff of 480 Khmers.  Over 1200 young adults have now found a regular job in businesses which appreciate the quality of their training.
Patrice’s Personal Involvement
After 25 years with the World Bank – in the US, Africa, Bosnia and Paris – I chose to become independent and accepted the Government of Cambodia’s invitation to work on the design a training program for civil servants.  In Phnom Penh, my wife and I had a chance to visit the city dump and witness the superb work done by PSE.  I did provide them some assistance in accessing donors’ money, while my wife delivered training to the school’s teachers.

Upon return, we – mostly Ghislaine! – remained active in the association: she organizes fund raising events and initiated the creation of PSE branches in the UK and Luxemburg. For my 60th birthday, our friends made a wonderful gift: a round trip to Phnom Penh to visit PSE.  So much as changed in 5 years!

Call To Action
  • Today, our top priority investment is the construction of a boarding house.  Owing to (1) the moving of the dumpsite 15 km away from the PSE Center; (2) the increase in land and rental costs; and (3) the decision of the authorities to relocate poor families far away from Phnom Penh, the children will no longer be able to go home at night and will stop coming to school unless we provide lodging. To give you an idea, this is the bill:
    • Cost of building a boarding house: 836.000 €.
    • Cost per bed unit: 2150 €
    • Funding still required:  480.000€

HOW CAN ALUMNI HELP?
  • Visit!  Should you travel to Cambodia (Angkor!), discover the children’s fate on the dump, see what has been achieved and testify to the NGO’s work.
  • Otherwise, sponsor a child (36€/month will pay for his/her education), and/or contribute to the cost of investment or help with the organization of fund-raising events.
